Transfers to Medical Sciences &
Engineering Programmes at UWI

Many students enter the Faculty of Pure & Applied Sciences hoping to gain a transfer to the Faculties of Medical Sciences or Engineering. Persons wishing to transfer need to realise that this only happens in exceptional cases with only a handful of students each year being accepted for transfer from Cave Hill.

Preliminary Science courses cannot be taken in an attempt to improve poor CAPE or GCE A’level grades. Faculty Regulation 12(c) prevents a student registering for a Preliminary Science course which overlaps substantially with any CAPE or GCE A’level course previously passed.

The Faculty of Pure & Applied Sciences must ensure that students follow a programme of study that allows that person to graduate with a BSc in a timely fashion. Students wishing to transfer to Medical Sciences or Engineering must be pursuing a combination of courses that meets their BSc requirements rather than courses solely geared to facilitate a transfer.

Medical Sciences

For Medicine, you must apply for the transfer by the deadline of the second Friday in January each year. Persons are only likely to be considered for transfer with Preliminary Science or Level 1 passes at grade B+ or above. Persons are not eligible for transfer after Level 1 of the BSc degree. Such persons have an opportunity to be considered for entry to Medicine on graduating with their BSc degree. Graduates usually must have attained at least Upper Second Class Honours (GPA ≥ 3.0) degree. Persons needing a summer school course to complete their degree should note that such results are usually declared too late to allow entry to Medicine in that calendar year.

Persons wishing to transfer to medicine should study the entry requirements for the Faculty of Medical Sciences, Cave Hill, the Faculty of Medical Sciences, Mona  and the Faculty of Medical Sciences, St. Augustine.

Persons wishing to transfer to Veterinary Medicine should study the entry requirements for the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine programme.

Persons wishing to transfer to Dentistry should study the entry requirements for the Doctor of Dental Surgery programme.
