Caribbean Feminism in Local Spotlight

For Release Upon Receipt - Tuesday, October 22, 2013

Caribbean feminism will be in the local spotlight when Professor M. Jacqui Alexander delivers the 19th annual Caribbean Women, Catalysts for Change lecture in memory of the late Dame Nita Barrow.

This public lecture hosted by the Institute for Gender and Development Studies: Nita Barrow Unit will take place on Friday, November 15 at 7:30 pm in Lecture Theatre One of the Roy Marshall Teaching Complex of the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus.

The lecture entitled “Decolonization As Healing Practice: The Unfinished Project of (Caribbean) Feminism” offers a unique opportunity for the Barbadian public to examine decolonization from a feminist perspective.

M. Jacqui Alexander is Professor of Women and Gender Studies at the University of Toronto. Animated by anti-colonial, feminist, women of color and queer movements in different parts of the world, her scholarship has addressed the centrality of (hetero)sexuality to the project of nation building; the pedagogical importance of teaching for justice; the need for a critical interdisciplinarity; and the sacred dimensions of women’s experience. She has lectured extensively in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, Europe and North America.

The event is open to the general public. The Institute for Gender and Development Studies: Nita Barrow Unit is sending a special invitation to students and youth organisations as well as women’s, men’s and LGBT groups.
