UWI Hosts Public Lecture on US Russia Relations

For Release Upon Receipt - Thursday, April 6, 2017

On April 20th, 2017, on an invitation from Vice-Chancellor of The University of the West Indies (The UWI), Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, Vice Provost for International Affairs and Director of the Reves Center for International Studies at College of William & Mary, Professor Stephen E. Hanson will give a public lecture at The UWI themed: “The Novelty of Putin's Patrimonialism: Analysing Russian Regime Change." The lecture takes place at the University’s Regional Headquarters in Jamaica from 5.30 p.m. (6.30 p.m. Eastern Standard time) and will be streamed live on www.uwitv.org . The session will be chaired by Ambassador Dr. Richard Bernal, Pro Vice-Chancellor of Global Affairs at The UWI.

Vice-Chancellor Beckles has been hosting a series of public discussions which seek to offer informed analysis, perspective and context to important political, social and economic developments in the Caribbean region and wider world. Panelists for these discussions are drawn from the worlds of academia, public policy, diplomacy, civil society, arts, culture and sports. It is on this background that the next in this series will be on historic and current US-Russian relations, as the world looks on at the recent trajectory of bilateral relations between the two superpowers, following a multi-faceted relationship for over 200 hundred years.

Professor Hanson will share his expertise on the subject during a one-hour lecture, followed by an open Q&A. He is the author of Post-Imperial Democracies: Ideology and Party Formation in Third Republic France, Weimar Germany, and Post-Soviet Russia and Time and Revolution: Marxism and the Design of Soviet Institutions and a co-author of books and numerous journal articles and book chapters examining post-communist politics in comparative perspective.
