Students should consult the booklet, 'Regulations for Graduate Degrees and Diplomas', available from the School for Graduate Studies. This details all regulations that govern our programmes. Some of the most important issue are outlined below.
Each course consists of a coursework component and a final exam component. The percentage weighting of each course is stated within the syllabus outline of each course.
To pass a course, a student must pass both the coursework and the final exam components. If a student fails a component, the following options may be given.
|
|
- If the student fails the coursework component, then the student, at the discretion of the examiner, may be allowed to resubmit the coursework. However, this must take place before the final exam.
- If the student fails the final exam, the student may be given an oral or a supplemental exam. This however is at the sole discretion of the relevant exam committee. If an oral is granted, the highest mark that can be obtained for the course is 50% B.
- If the student fails only 1 component and repeats the course, the marks for the passed component can be used. However, the student would be deemed as having failed the first attempt at the course.
- If the student fails both components, the student is deemed to have failed the course and must repeat the course.
Note that any student who fails one or more courses is not eligible for a distinction. Also, if a student fails a course twice, they are required to withdraw from the programme.
The grading scheme used in all programmes is:
