Learning Objectives for the Bryophyte Section of the Course

By the end of this section the student should: be able to-

  1. Recognize a moss or liverwort
  2. Describe the four features Bryophytes share with other land plants
  3. Describe the three features that distinguish Bryophytes from other land plants
  4. Draw a life cycle diagram of a Bryophyte
  5. Be able to distinguish mosses, leafy liverworts and thallose liverworts
  6. Describe the ecological role of Bryophytes
  7. Describe gas exchange and water movement in mosses and liverworts
  8. Describe vegetative and sexual reproduction in Bryophytes.
  9. Describe the generalized sporophyte of both a moss and liverwort.
  10. Explain the hygroscopic movement of elaters
  11. Describe the general spore dispersal mechanism of a liverwort
  12. Describe the general spore dispersal mechanism of a moss
  13. Describe one spore dispersal mechanism of a named liverwort
  14. Describe five specific spore dispersal mechanism of named mosses
  15. Show evidence of self-study by acquiring relevant knowledge about mosses and liverworts other than that presented by the lecturer
