Overall Aims of the Plant Kingdom Section of the Course

By the end of the course the student should:-

    1. Understand the defining features of plants

    2. Be able to describe the distinguishing features of algae, bryophytes, pteridophytes, gymnosperms and angiosperms.

    3. Be able to recognize these major plant groups

    4. Understand how land plants evolved from algal ancestors, including the evolution of the

seed habit

    5. Be able to synthesize concepts from different sections of the course

    6. Be experienced in acquiring relevant knowledge from books, journals and web sources

    7. Be able to view slides by bright field microscopy using X10, X40 and X100 objectives

    8. Be able to prepare accurate diagrams from botanical specimens observed using the light microscope

    9. Be able to estimate the magnification of diagrams prepared from slides observed using the light microscope
