Learning Objectives for the
Algae Section of the Course
By the end of the course the student should:-
- Explain
why green and red algae are included in the plant kingdom while other algal
groups are not
- Describe
the three features that distinguish green algae from land plants
- List
the habitats of green algae
- Describe
the essential features of the lichen symbiosis
- Define
the terms planktonic and benthic
- Describe
the economic importance of algae
- Distinguish
the main morphological forms shown by green algae and name one example of
each type
- Differentiate
the 3 forms of syngamy shown by algae
- Explain
the terms sporophyte, gametophyte and alternation of generations.
- Illustrate,
with a named example for each, the following types of life cycle;-
isomorphic alternation of generations, heteromorphic alternation of
generations, no alternation of generations.
- Show
evidence of self-study by acquiring relevant knowledge about algae other
than that presented by the lecturer
