BL 34D - Crop Ecology

This is an ongoing project. The focus is on the crops grown, ecological/agronomic problems encountered, solutions and innovations.

The 1997-98 class was divided into five groups each writing a draft chapter covering:-

• 1. The seventeenth century (1627-1699).
• 2. The eighteenth century.
• 3. The nineteenth century.
• 4. 1900-45.
• 5. Post second world war.

For 1998-99, the class was again divided into five groups. Each group focussed on a topic, rather than a time period, but still with historical and ecological perspectives. The topics were:-

• Soil conservation.
• Biological control of pests.
• Sugarcane breeding.
• Barbados blackbelly sheep.
• Ornamental horticulture.

For 1999-2000, a smaller class has been divided into three groups. The focus is on the cultivation of three currently grown crops:-

• Carrots
• Melons
• Pumpkins
