§ ASYNCHRONOUS TRANSFER MODE(ATM )

This transmission protocol segments data into small, fixed size cells to be transmitted to their destination, where the original data is re-assembled. Data from different users are intermixed asynchronously during transmission to maximize utilization of network resources. This technology can be used with both LANs and WANs and is in use by several Backbone ISPs. Transmission of both voice and video is supported and data transfer speeds range from 1.5 to 2488Mbps.
