ELET2100 - Microprocessors I

[ This page was last updated: August 2008 ]

Anyone can learn to use and understand how microprocessors or microcontrollers operate. These notes are based mainly on the INTEL 8085  8-bit microprocessor (CPU) but the basic principals are applicable to almost all microprocessors designed. These Lessons are notes and will not necessarily follow the lectures delivered in the classroom. They are to supplement the lectures and provide a basic overview of some topics from the course.

Some details:

Lectures will be held in the Embedded Systems Lab (ESL) on Tuesday’s at (2:00-3:00) pm and on Wednesday’s at (12:00-1:00) pm. Please be on time !

All lectures will be of one-hour duration.

Please obtain a copy of the required Lab text, which you will need to complete experiments.

Two class tests of one-hour each will contribute 20% towards your final mark.

These tests will be held on Wednesday 15th October, 2008 (Week 7) and Wednesday 19th November, 2008 (Week 12), both at (3:00-4:00) pm,  in the Embedded Systems Lab (ESL).

Labs will be every Wednesday from (2:00-6:00) pm in the Embedded Systems Electronics Lab (ESL). Please purchase the Lab book “Using the SDK-85 Microprocessor Trainer” from the Bookshop.

Required Text

Using the SDK-85 Microprocessor Trainer       (P. Gibbs)

N.B: To minimize costs, no other book is listed under Required Text but there are many introductory microprocessor texts in our Main Library. Best if based on the INTEL microprocessor eg:

“Microprocessor Architecture, Programming, and Applications with the 8085” – R.S. Gaonkar (ISBN 0-13-019570-7)

“Introduction to Microprocessors with the INTEL 8085” – J.A. Seeger (ISBN 0-15-543527-2)

“Microprocessor Programming, Troubleshooting, and Interfacing” – J.W. Coffron (ISBN 0-13-581976-8)

“Microprocessor Theory and Applications” – M. Rafiquzzaman (ISBN 0-13-583691-3)

Most of these books can be purchased via the Internet.
