| Abstract: | A
novel frame synchronization technique for a turbo decoder is presented
based on the concept of a probability surface metric within a modified
maximum a posteriori decoder. Using a counter with a reflecting barrier
to establish whether there is sufficient evidence to reject the
existing synchronization state, theoretical expressions are derived for
the performance of this technique for any channel signal-to-noise
ratio. The probability of a false-alarm can be reduced to an extremely
small value with a penalty of only a slight increase in the average
number of information bits to be processed to reject an incorrect
synchronization state. Simulation results are presented for the
standard rate 1/2 (7,5) turbo code. Abstract Number(s):
